Victory Brewing eyeing Arizona, Missouri?

BeerNews.org - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 6:36pm

Lots of interesting stuff in this one . . .

Thanks to @Hoptopia for alerting me to this video featuring Victory Brewing President/Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski. I’m still in the process of watching this but I’ve already picked up two interesting tidbits. First, Covaleski mentions Missouri and Arizona as two states that have been identified as ready for their beers. This would suggest that there is a possibility that, with the most recent brewery expansion, Victory beers could make their way to shelves in those two states.

Secondly, at the 16:30…tipping point talk! I alluded to the fast rise and downfall of craft beer in the mid-late 90s but failed to go into why that happened. 1996 was the “high water mark” for brewery openings in the U.S. since prohibition, according to Covaleski, and 1997 was the highest year for brewery closures. Breweries expanded too fast and lost sight of quality control. Others that had no business making beer on a production scale got into the business without the necessary skills.

This also marks Gary Vaynerchuk’s second beer video in the past month. With nearly 5,000 views and 300+ comments on the last beer video, it’s interesting to see the wine/tech guru giving craft beer more play airtime and great exposure with the wine-drinking crowd. Vaynerchuk sells beer at his family’s store, Wine Library, in New Jersey.

Odell Bourbon Barrel Stout returns in September

BeerNews.org - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 5:36pm

(Fort Collins, CO) – On September 13, 2010, Odell Brewing will release the latest batch of its Bourbon Barrel Stout. Part of the brewery’s Single Serve series of beers, Bourbon Barrel Stout is an Imperial Stout aged in oak Bourbon barrels.

This summer, three Odell brewers traveled to Kentucky to hand select the aging barrels for Bourbon Barrel Stout. They visited a variety of distilleries examining thousands of different barrels and decided on barrels from the Maker’s Mark distillery.

Bourbon Barrel Stout was aged in these charred oak barrels for months and then blended to create the final batch. The 10.5% ABV stout was then bottled in 750 ml cork and cage finish bottles where it conditioned for another two weeks.

“The delicate vanilla and maple candy Bourbon aromas give way to a panoply of smells that include chocolate, caramel, roasted almonds and coffee,” said Andrew Nagy in his review of the beer for Cigar Aficionado. “The stout is well balanced to the palette as molasses, mocha and chocolate flavors start and then turn to the familiar whiskey taste of wood, vanilla and root beer candy, followed by a finish of coffee and toasted marshmallow.”

Odell Brewing will celebrate the return of Bourbon Barrel Stout, with an uncorking party on Saturday, September 11th from 4 – 6 p.m. in the brewery’s tap room. Guests can enjoy samples of the beer as well as live music by Better Than Bacon, and Acoustic Gripweed. Bourbon Barrel Stout is available in the brewery’s nine state distributor region at a suggested retail price of $14.99 per bottle.

Odell Brewing was recently named “Brewery of the Year” by 5280 Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2010 North American Beer Awards – gold medal for Woodcut No. 3, silver medal for India Barleywine, silver medal for Red Ale, and bronze for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2010 Australian International Beer Awards – silver for 5 Barrel Pale Ale, silver for 90 Shilling, and bronze for IPA. 2010 World Beer Cup® – bronze for Red Ale. 2010 Denver International Beer Competition – silver for IPA, and silver for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2009 Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival – silver medal for 5 Barrel Pale Ale, bronze medal for 90 Shilling. 2009 BrewNZ Awards – gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale, silver for 90 Shilling, and silver for IPA. 2008 World Beer Cup® – gold for IPA, silver for Double Pilsner, silver for Cutthroat Porter. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for IPA, silver medal for Easy Street Wheat, bronze medal for Extra Special Red.

Allagash Vrienden collaboration with New Belgium gets second approval

BeerNews.org - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 1:10pm

(Portland, ME) – An update on what’s happening at Allagash Brewing.

Vrienden, the collaboration with New Belgium just received its second label approval. The New Belgium label was approved a few weeks back. Both beers are doing their thing in the tanks at both breweries at the moment. Says Allagash Brewmaster, Jason Perkins, “Timing of the beer is unknown at this point. It will be a mostly draft release from our end with a few bottles for sale in the store. We need to wait out the Lacto and brett and they take time. We hope late fall/early winter.” Allagash will sell its version in 375 ml bottles. A brief video of the collab is shown below.

In other news, the Brothers Beer Advocate are at Allagash as I type this, brewing up the official beer for the Belgian Beer Fest this fall. Catch all the updates from the BeerAdvocate Twitter account here (even if you’re not signed up for Twitter). One interesting message says, “New [Coolship] batch this Nov. Rob says they do plan on selling batches eventually.”

Other recent Allagash updates can be found here.

Baltimore Beer Week 2010 kicks off in early October

BeerNews.org - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 12:07pm

(Baltimore, MD) – Received a message from Brad over at BeerinBaltimore.com.

Baltimore is one of many cities in the U.S. celebrating craft beer with a week of events. Here’s an introduction to Baltimore Beer Week courtesy of the website’s About page.

“On the heels of the very successful Inaugural Baltimore Beer Week in October 2009, the organizing committee for Baltimore Beer Week 2010 has taken on the challenge of making this year’s event even better. Event founder, Joe Gold, recently commented ‘that as the economy stymied last year, our event seemed to breathe a new energy into the regional beer scene.’

Who could have predicted such a groundswell of interest from the beer community and with over 375 individual events last year, the emphasis this year will be on the quality of the events versus the quantity. Promotions coordinator, Dominic Cantalupo, stated that ‘while we were more successful than we anticipated, we feel the need to drive the Beer Week to a higher level and we have a determination to incorporate more ancillary or fringe businesses, if you will, into the overall event. We envision broadening the spectrum of brands and events and enlightening more of the macro-minded consumers.’

Baltimore definitely has its own unique beer culture that extends beyond the Chesapeake Bay region and as we all become more globally oriented, why not let beer be our ambassador. Baltimore Beer Week 2010 has retained the talented and dedicated volunteer committee that made last year a winner and with support from our Flagship Sponsor, Heavy Seas Beer, Media Sponsor, The City Paper, and an ever-growing list of additional sponsors forming a firm foundation, the foam will again rise to the top.”

Flat 12 Bierwerks to open in Indianapolis this fall

BeerNews.org - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 11:50am

(Indianapolis, IN) – For weeks now, Flat 12 Bierwerks has kept its man behind the beer a secret. Today, Flat 12 unveils Rob Caputo as head brewer of the newest craft brewery in Indianapolis set to open this fall.

“We are passionate about craft beer, and we hope that comes through whenever you drink a Flat 12 beer.”
Caputo is a process engineer and brewing veteran who began brewing craft beer in his backyard for neighbors, friends and family more than a decade ago. Teaming up with fellow co-founders Sean O’Connor, a finance executive with an expertise in operations, and Steve Hershberger, a marketing technology and social media specialist, the partners are accelerating the brewing revival in Indiana.

“At Flat 12 we are excited to be involved not only with the Indiana craft beer movement, but what is going on all across the United States,” said Caputo. “We are passionate about craft beer, and we hope that comes through whenever you drink a Flat 12 beer.”

The inaugural line-up includes brews for all beer fans, including a Blonde, an American Wit, an Amber, a Porter and an IPA. Flat 12 will also offer specialty and seasonal beers.

“We’re committed to brewing beers that our consumers are as passionate about as we are,” said O’Connor, president of Flat 12. “We’ve started referring to Flat 12’s passionate consumers as Hopstars™. They’re the reason that craft beer is seeing such strong growth here in Indiana and elsewhere.”

Pelican Brands, an Indianapolis-based global beverage brand management company, is the exclusive brand manager and distributor of Flat 12’s brews. As Flat 12 intends to gain national reach by 2012, the company is keeping fellow Hoosiers its priority.

“We will always focus our efforts in making sure the brand performs well here in Indiana”, said Hershberger, chief marketing officer of Flat 12. “Whether it’s at a local tavern, a favorite restaurant or a pre-game tailgate, we want to make sure we are doing it right, making a social experience better. If you can’t be successful in your own backyard, you can’t be successful beyond it.”

The brewery is located in the historic Holy Cross District at 414 N. Dorman St. and will house space for production, a tasting room, a biergarten and an outdoor urban garden, which will support Caputo’s brewing and further the facility’s green initiatives.

Audience Participation: As I Contemplate A Trip West, How Do You Travel?

Madison Beer Review - Tue, 08/31/2010 - 6:30am
One thing I've realized. I know very, very little about beer not produced in Wisconsin.

I have the occassion to drive to Portland, Oregon starting on Thursday through Monday (Labor Day). I'll be passing through Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Aside from Surly and Upright, I have no idea what beer is any good, what I should be getting, or even what I can expect to find in stores. I have to check luggage for my flight back (I'm taking a tent with me and tent stakes aren't exactly allowed in the carry-ons, you know?), so I plan on bringing back as much beer as I can.

There is one side of me that says "Eh, f- it, figure it out on the road." This is my impetuous sense of adventure that can result in really cool, unique stuff based on the personal recommendations of people and places that you meet and see along the way. It is this sense of "get in a car and go" that, frankly, got me into this trip to begin with (you will find out, if you were to meet me, that you can pretty much talk me into doing anything that I've never done before). However, this is putting my faith in strangers as I have no frame of reference or guide to show me the way. Moreover, there is a huge possibility for missed opportunity for the sake of spontaneity.

On the other hand, by planning and having some idea of what to look for, I can maximize the bounty of my trip. This is my first trip out there, and while I may get back to Oregon or Washington, the odds of me being in North Dakota, Wyoming or Idaho anytime soon is pretty slim. So, my other option is to assiduously research the breweries and brewpubs, make a list of stuff that I want and go straight for that at the liquor store and supplement that list (or check that list) with local knowledge.

So, what do you think?

How do you travel? Do you throw caution to the wind or do you do your research down to the beer bar closest to your hotel?

Grilled Foie Gras with Gastrique of Porter

The Washington brewery boom

BeerNews.org - Sun, 08/29/2010 - 12:33pm

In 2010, there is a good chance that we will be pushing 200 new craft breweries. Washington is one of the central pieces of the movement.

Here’s a rundown of what’s happening with the latest breweries to apply or get their liquor licenses approved:

Bellevue Brewing. Bellevue. “Inspection and final interview by the WSLCB on September 2! Then, we wait for the feds (TTB) to stamp our application.” – Facebook page.

From The Bellevue Reporter: “[Founder, John Robertson's] plans hit the fast track on August 12, when Robertson signed a letter of intent for a six-year lease on a 12,000 square-foot space at the Evergreen Center, located off 130th Ave. NE near the Bel-Red corridor.”

Valhöll Brewing. Poulsbo. Approved two weeks ago and operating.

Here’s the latest from the Washington Beer Blog.

Ancient Lakes Brewing. Quincy. Approved 2-3 weeks ago and operating.

Per their website, “Quincy Gold (batch #0001) has been brewed!!”

Emerald City Beer Co. Seattle. Opened earlier this month.

The brewery has released its first beer: Emerald City Dottie Seattle Lager.

North Sound Brewing. Mount Vernon. Open and kegs just debuted in Seattle over the weekend.

Termini Brewing. Lacey. Applied.

This is actually the second coming of the recently-closed Speedway Brewing. Per Facebook, “It comes with a heavy heart, but Speedway is CLOSED. Enough fighting with the landlord and the dance studio. Big Brewery coming soon…..Stay in touch. We appreciate the dedication of our regulars, but that wasn’t enough.” The latest word is that the brewery was seeking a 30 barrel system and looking for investors.

Icicle Brewing. Re-applied. The brewery is currently being constructed per Facebook.

There are over a dozen other microbrewery applications in and waiting for approval over the past two months. August applicants can be viewed here and July applicants can be viewed here.

Despite the recent closure of San Juan Brewing, approximately 20 microbrewery applications in two months is certainly something for Washington beer drinkers to cheer.

The Genesee Brewery to Install 24-Ounce Can Production Line

BeerNews.org - Sat, 08/28/2010 - 1:44pm

$3.5 Million Investment Means New Jobs by Labor Day

(Rochester, NY) – Next month, the Genesee Brewery will complete the installment of a new 24-ounce can production line. The brewery will immediately add 12 new positions to work the line, which will produce 24-ounce single-serve versions of Genesee, Genny Light, Genesee ICE, Genesee Cream Ale and The Original Honey Brown Lager.

The $3.5 million piece of equipment, which produces 300 cans per minute and more than 30,000 cases per day, provides opportunities for the Genesee Brewery to expand its product line-up in the c-store channel. “Our investment in a 24-ounce can production line opens many doors for the brewery. We now have the capabilities to produce one of the best selling products: single-serve cans and to further develop our relationships with contract brewing partners,” said Kenn Yartz, COO, North American Breweries.

The brewery is actively recruiting employees to fill the 12 new jobs, created by the addition of the new line. The new jobs mean that the brewery has added 65 people over the last year. “This is an exciting time for The Genesee Brewery. Our employees have worked hard to put Genny back on the map,” said Rich Lozyniak, CEO, North American Breweries. “With continued investment and strong marketing discipline, we’re seeing the results of our work.”

According to AC Nielsen data, single-serve containers account for more than 50 percent of beer unit sales in convenience stores. Retail sales of Genesee products are up more than 20 percent in that channel. The new products in single-serve 24-ounce cans are expected to spark additional growth for the Genesee family.

“This new line will help us perform even better in the c-store channel, providing our customers with a single-serve can,” said Jason Drewniak, brand manager for Genesee and Genny Light. “We also plan on introducing the 24-ounce can to grocery stores and other retailers, in order to take advantage of a strong customer interest in this product size.”

The Genesee Brewery is partnering with Rexam, one of the largest beverage can makers in the world, to manufacture all five of the 24-ounce cans. “We worked closely with the team at Genesee to support their move into this popular package and extend their reach in the convenience and grocery store channels,” said Andre Balbi, president and CEO, Rexam Beverage Can Americas. “This can is not only the best sustainability choice in terms of recycling superiority, but will stand out on retail shelves and serve an important role in helping further build the Genesee brand.”

Installation of the Genesee Brewery 24-ounce can line began in May, 2010 and the first run is set for mid-September. Consumers can expect the bigger version of their favorite beers in stores after October 1.

“Genesee and Genny Light have begun their comeback. This is another logical step toward expanding sales. We’re taking this product lineup into a growing industry trend – the single-serve can. And we’re confident beer drinkers will be thrilled to see their beloved Genny in more places and in a convenient pack size,” said Drewniak.

About The Genesee Brewery

Full Sail Adam’s Malty Bomb joins Brewer’s Share lineup

BeerNews.org - Sat, 08/28/2010 - 1:21pm

Brewery Invites you to Meet the Brewer and the Beer and Support Local Charity

(Hood River, OR) – As the hot summer winds down and the days get shorter, dreams of cold mountain air, skiing and snowboarding start to swirl in our heads. That can mean only one thing: it’s time to start praying for powder. To celebrate the upcoming wintery season, Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share line up that is sure to entice the snow gods to bless the season with plenty of powdery snow. Brewed by Full Sail Brewer Adam Bulson, “Adam’s Malty Bomb” is pray for powder porter that’s sure to make our mountain snowy white all season long.

Porters are Adam’s favorite beer after a day on the snow, and he thought releasing his own version preseason would be a good omen for a great winter. Adam’s Malty Bomb is a robust porter with a big body and lots of dark, caramel/toffee flavor, yet it won’t weigh you down like heavy snow. It’s hopped with just enough hops to balance out the malts, and finishes smooth with no sharp edges. Bomb’s away! (ABV 5.3% IBU 41)

Full Sail has scheduled two “Meet the Brewer and the Beer” events to showcase this new beer. The first Meet Brewer and the Beer event will be at Full Sail at Riverplace in Portland, Tuesday, September, 7th, from 5:00 – 6:30PM. The second is at the Full Sail Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, on Thursday, September 9th from 5:00 to 6:30PM. Join the Full Sail crew to celebrate the upcoming season, toast a pint of this new brew with Adam.

With Adam’s brew comes a new feature of the Brewer’s Share series—each brewer will pick a local charity of his or her choice to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sales of their beer. Adam chose Hood River Adopt-a-Dog – Hukari Animal Shelter, so every keg of Adam’s Malty Bomb benefits local animals in need.

The Brewer’s Share series is a line up of small batch draft beers where each Full Sailor takes a turn hand-crafting their own single batch recipe and a portion of the proceeds benefit a local charity of their choosing. Full Sail’s Brewer’s Share beers will only be available on tap at Full Sail’s Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, Oregon, and at Full Sail’s Brewery at Riverplace, in Portland, Oregon. Growlers to go are available. Full Sail will also offer Adam’s Malty Bomb at the Hood River Hopsfest on October 2nd. The next Brewer’s Share will be collaboration beer crafted by Full Sail’s Pub crew, and is expected in mid-November.

Deschutes Brewery announces Jubelale release

BeerNews.org - Sat, 08/28/2010 - 1:17pm

Bend, Oregon craft brewery’s Festive Winter Ale will be available to consumers in September

(Bend, OR) – Deschutes Brewery, one of the nation’s largest craft breweries, will be releasing its annual winter seasonal on shelves beginning September 20th. Jubelale was the first beer that the company ever bottled. Each year, a different regional artist is commissioned to create the label and packaging art for this brew.

This year, Oregon artist Natasha Bacca’s unique “creation of light” adorns the label. Bacca works in complete darkness, using beams of light with a tool she invented. By manipulating the color and the intensity of the light onto light sensitive paper, she literally paints with light. This is the first non-traditional, photo-based art medium used for the Jubelale label.

Bacca said, “The piece illustrates a cold winter night in the background with a dynamic warm fire in the foreground. I wanted the composition of the work to exhibit a balance of cool scenery elements with the warm and energetic celebrations of the season, exemplifying this festive time of year.”

A work of art in more way than one, this memorable seasonal ale is just the right gift to bring to the holiday party host. Its distinct taste celebrates the winter season, making Jubelale perfect for sharing around the hearth with family and friends.

Jubelale will be available in 6-packs, 12-packs and draft this October through December in the following states: Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, California, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah, Texas and Minnesota.

Pairings:
Roasted turkey with rosemary dressing
Slow-cooked beef brisket with apricot and apple fruit sauce
Warm pumpkin pie with real cream

Alcohol by Volume: 6.7%
IBUs: 60

About Deschutes Brewery
Located in beautiful Bend, Oregon, Deschutes Brewery is in the business of daring people to expect more from their beer. That’s why we started off in 1988, on the banks of the Deschutes River here in Bend, Oregon, by selling Black Butte Porter at a time when others were sure a dark beer would never catch on. Our brewers love to push the envelope, especially if it makes someone nervous. But for us, the highest praise is a raised glass and a toast of “Bravely Done!” For more information about Deschutes Brewery and its courageously crafted beers, please visit www.DeschutesBrewery.com or www.Facebook.com/Deschutes.Brewery.
