What's In My Fridge (Opening Day Edition): Maine Beer Company's Spring Peeper Ale
In celebration of one of the best beer drinking days of the year, Opening Day of the baseball season, I thought I'd write a few words about two of my favorite things (beer & baseball).
First some baseball trivia: Today marked the 100th anniversary of the ceremonial first pitch by the standing President. Who was the first President to do so? (Answer below.)
The beautiful weather, together w/the ball games going on brings thoughts of spring and a palate shift from our big warming winter beers to the lighter refreshing beers of spring. Today's selection is one such choice. It's something my ragtag team of beer lovers came across while on our trip around New England this past March.
Located right next door to Allagash (talk about looking out the window for some inspiration), this very small & environmentally conscience brewery has popped up. From what I could gather on the interweb, MBC started up in 2009 by two brothers, Dan & David Kleban. It’s arguably the smallest production brewery in the country, which is not a bad thing (everyone starts somewhere). According to their website, they only produce this one beer. However, two more have popped up on Beer Advocate. From their site:
Our production is limited and our process is slow (our beers are 100% bottle conditioned) but our dedication to brewing really good beer and doing what’s right always comes first. We let our brew speak for itself.
Well let’s see what this beer says to us.

Name: Maine Beer Co’s Spring Peeper Ale
Brewery Location: Portland, ME, USA
Style: American Pale Ale
ABV: 5.5%
Package: 16 OZ Bottle
Availability: Available in many establishments in & around Portland, ME. I purchased this bottle at Downeast Beverage Co. which was just outside our hotel. Friendly staff w/great taste in music (top notch beer selection as well).
The first thing you notice w/this beer is the big white frothy head that came and stayed for the duration of the bottle. Next you notice the clear golden color followed by a spring-like aroma of freshly cut grass & flowers. This was the right call for a day like today. Light, crisp, & clean in the mouth w/a subtle hop bitterness in the finish. It screams to be had-more then once-at a weekend barbecue after some Wiffle-ball. Great work guys. Maybe some of that Allagash magic has rubbed off. We will all be better for it.

Trivia Answer: William Howard Taft, our 27th President, was the first President to throw our the first pitch at a ball game in 1910. See how our current POTUS did this afternoon...
I like how he remained true to his team & wore a White Sox cap. His form on the other hand...
