History:
Lying on a white sandy beach in the Caribbean, Rhonda Kallman was inspired to start New Century Brewing Co., makers of Edison Light Beer. After 15 years of serving as founding partner and executive vice president of the Boston Beer Co., makers of Samuel Adams, Rhonda left her position to explore the next chapter of her life. Although she was in love with the beer industry, the thrill of the job was gone as Samuel Adams reached its pinnacle.
To ring in the new millennium and celebrate her new freedom, Rhonda set out for a short vacation with her family in January 2000. After only a few days, Rhonda heard the familiar buzz of her cell phone beckoning her from the bottom of the beach bag. On the other end was the familiar voice of Dr. Joseph Owades, a world-renowned brewmaster and consultant. Rhonda and Joe always had the utmost respect and admiration for each other’s abilities and passion for the beer industry. He called to inspire her to do it all again. He said “I’ll make a beer, you start a company”.
That night, Rhonda tossed and turned. She loved the beer business, and now the most respected brewmaster in the business was offering to make her a sensational new beer. “I must be crazy,” she thought, finally drifting off under the spell of the rhythmic, gently lapping waves below her open window.
Early the next morning, she called Joe back. She said “You’re on. Under one condition. I don’t want you to make another microbrew or craft beer, I want you to reinvent light beer. One out of two beer drinkers drink light beer now and there is not much choice or variety for those drinkers”. To which the man known as the father of light beer responded coyly, “I’ve had a little experience in that area.” Rhonda and Joe began collaborating on launching a beer company focused entirely on bringing to market a great light beer that would have a smooth flavor, light taste and was extremely easy to drink.
Rhonda and Joe spoke daily. She put together all aspects to get the business launched, while Joe perfected his brew and the new brewing process he developed especially for Edison Light Beer. On September 10 2001, New Century Brewing Co. proudly introduced Edison.
