Why the name Sixpoint? Why the six-pointed star?
The answers are rich with history and storied in symbolism. The design of our symbol is by no means completely random - it is an honorable allusion to an ancient geometric symbol that has been used to denote superior beer throughout the ages.
It was once common for brewers to brand their wooden barrels with a six-pointed star - a hexagram - to denote the purity of their product. The six points of the hexagram symbolized the six critical elements of the brewing process: water, grain, malt, hops, yeast, and the brewer.
The Sixpoint Craft Ales logo, although derived from the brewer's hexagram, has taken on its own identity. To completely understand this pedigree, we must turn our attention to the nautical star, which also has a storied history.
Throughout time, sea-going travelers employed the stars as means of charting their course. The nautical star represents this facility. However, nowadays the star has taken on a renewed philosophical meaning - it is an iconic, popular, and often-tattooed symbol found on those who wish to represent the act of finding one's way through life.
The nautical star can be found all throughout Brooklyn, most notably on the facades of buildings. The star is especially prevalent in Red Hook, our home. This star is often cast in iron and embedded within a banner encompassing a building, such as the warehouse docks on Van Brunt street. The nautical star has proven to be diverse in symbolism, and we use it as a nod to the maritime roots of the neighborhood.
Our logo - a unique combination of the brewer's star and nautical star - combines the rich history of each and takes on an entirely new meaning. We pay homage to the ancient craft of brewing, but at the same time recognize our modern role and duty to interpret the art on our own terms. We remind you that we are from Brooklyn, and that we are proud to represent. Above all else, we help you to navigate through the endless ocean of various beers, bringing you back home to quality, back to Sixpoint Craft Ales.
