Toohey's New Tooheys was founded by two brothers: John Thomas Toohey and James Mathew Toohey. The sons of Irish migrants who went on to run pubs in Melbourne (the Lamerick Arms and The Great Britain), the Toohey brothers moved to Sydney in the 1860’s with the aim of carrying on the family business. This time, however, they wanted to brew the beer, rather just serve it.
First brewed in 1931, Tooheys New is, well, far from new. At the begining of the last century, Austrailian beer drinkers were moving away from the heavier English-style ale and stouts and heading towards more hoy-weather friendly, refreshing beer styles, like lager.
As a result, Tooheys launched “Tooheys New Special Beer” in 1931.
