Great Beer Test -- bugs, fix, and future
Submitted by eric.mckay on Sat, 02/14/2009 - 1:30am
The new version of GreatBrewers.com went live on 2/11/09. What does everyone think so far? What are the most useful features? What can we improve on?
The title of this thread was changed to fit the discussion below (admin April.26.2009)

gbt
I got 93 out of 100 questions right. how come it gave me 93 out of 146. where are the other 46 questions?
Thanks for bringing this up,
Thanks for bringing this up, Erin, and outstanding work on hte GBT!! The new site is still just a week old, so it really helps to hear about bugs like this. We're working on a fix, and it should be resolved by this coming Monday. We'll let you know when it's resolved.
Cheers!
Growing bank of questions on GBT
As a side note, the GBT currently has a bank of 146 questions, which will be growing every month. When you take the test, questions display randomly from the bank to try to provide a relatively unique experience each time the test is taken. We hope that GreatBrewers.com members interested in learning more about beer will come back and take the GBT every couple of weeks to build and maintain their knowledge on the subject.
If anyone has ideas of questions to add to the GBT, please send them our way!!
GBT scoring bug fixed
The bug that resulted in GBT scores based on the total number of questions in the data bank, rather than the number of questions on a test, has been resolved.
Please let us know if anything else comes up.
Thanks,
Eric
Site downtime on 2/22 - speed upgrade
For those of you who tried to visit GreatBrewers.com this morning, we apologize for the brief downtime. Our web developer, Sheng, worked some magic optimizing our database, which has substantially enhanced the speed of the site. We hope this will improve your experience as a member of our new, but rapidly growing online community.
Cheers!
More on GBT scoring
GBT told me I got 17 out of 20, but reviewing the test, it only showed 2 questions answered wrong.
GBT
Once you take the test, are your scores recorded somewhere? Or is it just an at-that-time report and resets every time you go back?

Oh yeah -- in the tabs at the top, thanks. Funny thing is, it says I didn't score 100, but it doesn't show me which ones were incorrect. Hmm.

Can't find incorrect answers upon second review
If you use this method, the correct answers are no longer shown, and it appears as if all "user answers" are correct. Reading the comments next to the response gives some indication, but having the column "Correct Answer" disappear makes finding your previous incorrect answers unnecessarily onerous.
GBT - needs work
I took the 100 question GBT. It gave me 95 correct, but a review of my answers only revealed 5 incorrect answers. The remaining 96 questions all showed both my response and the correct response as the same.
In addition, two of the questions had incorrect answers given as the "correct" response:
1. The question about the taste map on the tongue should be deleted entirely. This has been shown to be a hoax. All tastes are detected in all areas of the tongue:
""The tongue map? That old saw?" scoffs Linda Bartoshuk when I reach her at her laboratory at the Yale Univerity School of Medicine. Bartoshuk has done landmark studies on how people taste. "No, no. There isn't any 'tongue map.'"
- August 2004 issue of Gourmet magazine
AND
"Contrary to popular understanding, taste is not experienced on different parts of the tongue, although some regions are more sensitive than others. The 'tongue map myth' was based on a mistranslation of a German paper that was written in 1901 by a Harvard psychologist. Though there are small differences in sensation, which can be measured with highly specific instruments, all taste buds can respond to all types of taste."
- Wikipedia.com
2. The question regarding how many of the senses are used in judging beer has an incorrect answer:
"How many senses are regularly employed when describing and judging beer?:
A: "Four of the five senses are used to describe and judge beer. They are taste, touch, smell and sight. The auditory sense is usually not utilized in regard to describing beer, however the opening, pouring, and carbonation of beer can produce some very interesting sounds."
As a Master Beer judge with the BJCP, I can assure that I most certainly do use my ears in the judging of beer. When I am judging a beer that is bottled, I insist that the bottle be opened at the table, where I can hear the hiss when it opens. This is one of the first judgements I am making about the beer. It gives me some indication as to whether the beer is properly carbonated for style (a British Ordinary Bitter, though rarely bottled, should have much less carbonation than a Pilsner, which should have much less carbonation than a Saison or Bier de Garde).
"Listen to your beer!" - Fred Ekhardt
Thus, I find only 2 questions too which I provided incorrect responses. My score should read 98 out of 100.
The problem behind the
The problem behind the scoring bug relates to many aspects; it might take a while to get it fixed.

Off course it has, you just click individual people's username and Contact is there. But the new site is only one month old. It only has distributors contact. Once more importers/brewers/retailers join Great Brewers, you should be able to use the Contact Function to get a hold of them.

Enhancing drupal quiz module
The Quiz Module of Drupal was the engine for the Great Beer Test. This module is going to a new development circle by the its author Matt Butcher. Also, The Quiz Module was selected by Google for Google Summer Codes 2009. Under this investment, a new developer will devote his full time to this module. So, we will see a lot of enhancement coming! Exciting?
