Samuel Adams Bonfire Rauchbier

I purchased a Samuel Adams Harvest Collection 12 pack. One beer stood out in a not so good way, "Samuel Adams Bonfire Rauchbier" this was very disappointing. My wife and I took a brewery tour in the past and this was the sample test beer at the end. The group poured it into their cups from pitchers and sampled only to pour it back into the pitcher. Some hardcore beer fans drank the entire cup, but that was all. It got thumbs down, and then I purchase a collection twelve pack and there it was again. Jim Koch should re-think this one, it tastes like a charred piece of firewood and leaves a bad after taste. The other beers are as expected for Samuel Adams quality and rank very high on taste and quality.

I'm a huge fan of Sam Adams

I'm a huge fan of Sam Adams Rauchbier but then, I like Rauchbier in general. Bonfire has a more mellow and balanced taste as compared to the more authentic rauchbiers such as Schlenkerla and even Victory's Otto Ale.

Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone feels the same as you and that there are people out there who like smoked beer? And judging from the popularity and sacrosanct status of Schlenkerla, many other people like it and have liked it for a very long time. It's fine not to like a beer but to send pleas to a brewer to rethink a beer based solely on your palate is a tad bit ridiculous and melodramatic, don't you think?

Rest assured though that it is a limited release. Sam Adams' is no longer releasing the harvest collection and has replaced it with the winter collection. No Bonfire included.

I too am a Sam Adams fan, but not as invidious

I'm glad that you are a fan of something that tastes like someone burnt it in a forest fire. I too am a fan of Samuel Adams and hold nothing against them other than the advice to use this beer to make chili if I didn't like the taste. It has crossed my mind that some may disagree and they are entitled to their opinion just as I. But as for those who like or dislike as stated in my review the beer was sampled in the brewery and the majority disliked it. If Rauchbier was so good why don't we see it in six, twelve & case packaging by itself and not shoved into specialty packs?

So it is my belief that you being so upset that I post a review that does not agree with "your palate is a tad bit ridiculous and melodramatic, don't you think?"

You're probably right. Best

You're probably right. Best to just stamp out creativity and experimentation in brewing altogether and stick with, as your moniker suggests, nothing but Bud.

Quit being so butt-hurt. I was offering up a counterpoint to your opinion.

Samual Adams has an agressively large, and ever growing solection of ales. Quite impressive too~ veriety is key to market success. Personally, I find it interesting to contrast different brew styles and serving tempetures. Currently my associates and I have experienced several new brewery releases: Widmer Brother's Pitch Black, and Mendocino Brewing Company's Seasonal Oatmeal Stout.
Widmer Brother's, like Boston Beer Company, is constantly releasing new batch types. Not all are appreciated by every one though. And while I am not sure of the serving conditions of your most recent Burnt Forest experience, I am curious to know your opinion of Pitch Black.
The other issue to take to heart is availability. Mendocino Brewing Company has some great beverages but with a limited reach. Finally reaching the consumer, me, is the Seasonal Oatmeal Stout... Great stuff. I, like, enjoyed like tree 12 oz bottles of this coffee, chocolate, like truffle brew of six percent ABV before carelessly reaching into a wonderful refreshing palate shocking experience... I accidently reached into the frig, popped the cap off a Mendocino Blue Haron, and quite joyfully enjoyeed a clean refreshing crisp finish to a great night.
At best I can say is try them. If you do not like the overall experience, don't dump it brews out but give it a break and pick them up under different tempeture conditions. I do not always enjoy Blue Heron.
