Alt. The name of this beer style comes from the German word "alt" meaning "old". This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

Richly malty and long on the palate, with just enough hop backing to make this beautiful amber colored "alt" style beer notably well balanced.

Brooklyn Brown Ale

Product - Brooklyn Brown
Brewed By:
Brooklyn
Self-Defined Style:
American Brown Ale
Strength (ABV):
5.6% ABV

Northern English brown ales tend to be strong and dry, while southern English brown ales are milder and sweeter. Brooklyn Brown Ale combines the best of those classic styles and then adds an American accent in the form of a firm hop character and roasty palate. A blend of six malts, some of them roasted, give this beer its deep russet-brown color and complex malt flavor, fruity, smooth and rich, with a caramel, chocolate and coffee background. Generous late hopping brings forward a nice hop aroma to complete the picture.

Best With:
Brooklyn Brown Ale is particularly good with steaks, burgers, stews and barbecue, where it can put its caramel flavors to work with the caramelized flavors in the meat. It's also excellent with venison, ham and roasted pork, which engage the depth of malt character. After dinner, it's the perfect accompaniment to well-aged cheddar, Gouda and Gruyere cheeses.

Harpoon Cider

Product - Harpoon Cider
Brewed By:
Harpoon
Self-Defined Style:
Hard Cider
Strength (ABV):
4.1% ABV

In 1986 Harpoon co-founders Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary began brewing Harpoon in Boston to share with others the joy of making—and drinking—great beer. In 2000, we added a second brewery in Windsor, Vermont to keep up with the demand. As a regional craft brewer, we gained interest and respect for cider, a drink with strong roots and history in New England. Harpoon’s cider is our contribution to the long heritage of cider made with fresh juice from locally grown apples.

Best With:
Try this cider as an accompaniment with cheese, pork dishes, or simply enjoy it on its own. Cooking with Cider: enjoy cider-marinated pork, or use cider to steam mussels. Serve Cider: as an apertif, at brunch, and for special occasions. Bring Cider: along for picnics and parties. Mix Cider: with Harpoon beer. Cider and beer have a heritage in New England that dates back to the Pilgrims. The two drinks can be enjoyed together or you can enjoy cider on its own. Here are some of our recommendations. Try mixing Harpoon Cider with the following Harpoon Beers: Harpoon Cider + Harpoon Brown = Copperhead; Harpoon Cider + UFO Hefeweizen = Apfelweizen; Harpoon Cider + UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen = Indian Summer; Harpoon Cider + Harpoon Winter Warmer = Apple Pie!

The high hopping of Harpoon IPA is not only noticeable in the nose but especially in the finish. The lingering bitter finish of this beer is not harsh or astringent, but crisp and pronounced. This is created, in part, by dry hopping - a technique that involves adding fresh hops to the conditioning beer to provide a fresh hop aroma.

Best With:
Grilled seafood, Thai food, spicy chicken.

Brewed By:
Harpoon
Self-Defined Style:
Hefeweizen
Strength (ABV):
4.8% ABV

This beer displays a cloudy golden color and a dense, frothy head. The yeast, which has not been filtered out, accounts for the cloudiness of UFO. Wheat malt tends to create a larger head than barley malt, the cereal grain most often used in brewing. The aroma has a faint but clear citrus-like character. This is produced by the special yeast and accounts for the Bavarian tradition of serving hefeweizens with a lemon. The lemon accentuates the yeast's fruity, tart fragrance. UFO has a soft mouth feel and a refreshing, light body.

Best With:
Spicy foods and seafood.

Why does the world need another IPA? Because this one ain't like them others. Using hops of a different color, earthy and herbal, it's well balanced by bready malt. The result? An English-style IPA that separates itself from the ubiquitous bunch. Cartloads of bitter monkeys flinging wasteful amounts of bananas into the jungle - we're so done with that.

Initial malt sweetness followed by earthy, straw and herbal hop notes. Finishes dry with a pleasant lingering bitterness and distinctly British hop character.

Brewed By:
Rogue
Self-Defined Style:
Maibock
Strength (ABV):
6.5% ABV

Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us. In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with Maierbock as the elixir. Strangely, the association with the Grateful Dead is pure coincidence. Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast.

Best With:
This amber colored ale pairs nicely with brothy soups, salted almonds, game birds and seafood. This brew also offers a nice companion to cheeses and fruits.

Rogue's Shakespeare Stout is ebony in color, a rich creamy head and a mellow chocolate aftertaste.

Brewed By:
Oskar Blues
Self-Defined Style:
Double IPA
Strength (ABV):
8.7% ABV

G'Knight (formerly Gordon) is a hybrid version of strong ale, somewhere between an Imperial Red and a Double IPA. We make it with six different malts and three types of hops, then dry-hop it with a mutha lode of Amarillo hops. It features a gooey, resiny aroma and a luscious mouth feel. G'Knight is brewed with dash of chocolate malt in it, to round out its load of hops and balance the beer. The result is an assertive yet exceptionally smooth version of strong beer.

Best With:
A general rule of thumb with this beer is 'the spicier the better.' The impressive hop bitterness in this beer can stand up to just about any degree of spiciness in dry rubbed ribs, Cajun cuisine, curry based Indian food, or wasabi spiced Japanese fare.

Product - Oskar Blues Dales
Brewed By:
Oskar Blues
Self-Defined Style:
American Pale Ale
Strength (ABV):
6.5% ABV

Dale's Pale Ale is our flagship beer and America's first hand-canned craft beer. It's an assertive but deftly balanced beer (somewhere between an American pale ale and an India Pale Ale) brewed with hefty amounts of European malts and American hops. It features a meringue-like head, a copper color, and a hoppy nose, thanks to a big post-boil addition of Centennial hops. To complement its hoppy first impression, Dale's also sports a rich middle of malts and hops, and a bracing finish.

Best With:
This intense example of an American Pale Ale would have a wonderful relationship with a hearty meal of steaks, stews and chili's. Strong and sharp cheeses, like the Roquefort or Stilton would pair nicely.

Santa Fe Hefeweizen

Self-Defined Style:
American Pale Wheat Ale
Strength (ABV):
5.3% ABV

A true Bavarian wheat yeast, sixty percent wheat malt, and German hops make Santa Fe Wheat Beer as true to the style as any American rendition can be. German Wheat Beer, with its hints of banana and clove, its delectable, spicy, hops, and its pale golden color, is becoming increasingly popular in America’s craft brewing world, and with good reason: wheat beers are both light enough to please light beer drinkers, and complex enough to please true micro-brew connoisseurs.

Santa Fe Nut Brown Ale

Product - Santa Fe Nut Brown Ale
Self-Defined Style:
American Style Brown Ale
Strength (ABV):
5.2% ABV

The Brown Ale style originated in the pubs of England, where beer drinkers desired a beer that was both flavorful and complex, but at the same time mild enough to be a session beer. The Santa Fe Brewing Company’s interpretation of this style uses a combination of high mash temperature, hard water, and low-alpha acid hops to produce a product that is both true to the style and distinctly Santa Fe. Brewing jargon aside, Santa Fe Nut Brown Ale is an easy-drinking beer, mild, smooth, and always a favorite. Try a keg at your next party!

Anything but a typical American Pale, Santa Fe Pale Ale is as full bodied as its most robust English counterparts, while asserting its American origin with a healthy nose resplendent with Cascade and Willamette hops. It finishes with a well-balanced combination of the subtle, almost Pilsner-like maltiness accentuated by the German yeast used to brew this Santa Fe classic, and a hop bite sufficient to leave a lingering smile on the face of any fan of American Pale Ales.

A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself.

Santa Fe Chicken Killer Barley Wine Ale

Product - Santa Fe Chicken Killer clr
Self-Defined Style:
Barley Wine
Strength (ABV):
10.2% ABV

Chicken Killer Barley Wine is the revolutionary beer that will someday define America’s unique Barley Wine style. It is brewed with twice the ingredients of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s other beers, and only half the usual amount of liquid is extracted from these ingredients. This makes one substantial beer. At over ten percent alcohol, Chicken Killer is actually as substantial as wine, but this is not to say that it is difficult to drink. On the contrary; be careful with this one. The flavors of the beer are at first as overwhelming as the intense Santa Fe sun.

Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.

Best With:
While we think Pale Ale tastes great with everything, its assertive hop flavor goes especially well with spicy cuisine, since its clean flavors counterbalance the richness of many hot dishes. It also goes well with starters and salads, its spicy complexity stimulating both appetites and conversation.

Dark and rich, Sierra Nevada Porter is a delicious, medium-bodied ale with a creamy head. The Porter's smooth flavor (malty with hints of caramel) comes from a blend of deep-roasted barley malts.

Best With:
While porters are traditionally paired with steak (think Porterhouse), its deep maltiness is an equally perfect match for the rich, smoky flavors of grilled Portobello mushrooms. The creaminess of Porter's chocolate and caramel malts also makes it a perfect accompaniment to desserts, especially those made with chocolate.

Bitterness (IBU):

Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Sierra Nevada Stout is satisfyingly rich. Caramel and Black malts give the Stout its deep, dark color and pronounced roasted flavor.

“Sierra Nevada Stout is admirable from nose to finish, with notes of malty sweetness to the palate but plenty of bitterness available to set up a stimulating counterpoint.” – Christopher Finch, A Connoisseur’s Guide to the World’s Best Beer

GOLD MEDAL WINNER
California State Fair (Stout, Sweet & Foreign: 2000)

Best With:
Black malts give Stout a smokiness that demands an equally intense flavor pairing. Smoked or raw oysters are a traditional accompaniment, but other shellfish serve equally well. For vegetarian dishes that stand up to Stout, try lentil stew, marinated eggplant, or smoked tempeh. Stout also makes a delightful dessert beer when matched with creamy tiramisu or toasted almond biscotti.

This is an aggressive ale. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory–maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beverage will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make things taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

Best With:
This IPA's generous hop character makes it an ideal pairing with spicy foods such as barbecue, dry-rubbed ribs, or ethnic cuisine such as curry based Indian food, wasabi based Japanese dishes, or spicy Thai entrees.

First brewed in 2007 as the Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this ale was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didn't last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldn't be any more. For us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this ale. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self-righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours.

When reading the name "stone Cali-Belgique IPA", "Cali-" hints that it's a California-style IPA, and this beer has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word "Belgique" (which is how Belgium's French-speaking population says the word "Belgian"; the Dutch-speaking Belgians say België"). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA. The result is both completely new and different., while still being recognized as a Stone Brew - and Stone IPA in particular.
