A crisp bitterness finishes the experience without being harsh.

Feeling Hoppy? The Shipyard IPA is a single-hopped ale that satisfies the discriminating India Pale Ale enthusiast. Wonderfully balanced and deceptively smooth. Fuggles are a traditional variety English hop and their mild spicy aroma makes them highly prized by brewers. These classic hops were first propagated in 1875 and are named after the farmer who cultivated the strain in East Kent, England. The hop is a vine and the part used to aromatize and flavor beer is the cone-like flower. Its complex aromas predominate in a dry, crisp ale.

Unfiltered American Wheat Beer
Strength (ABV):

Like the digits suggest, it's a beer that's densely populated with flavor and loaded with character. We don't filter it, so none of its life and soul is stripped away. The first thing you notice is the hazy, cloudy appearance. That's how you know it's unfiltered. What hits you next is the spicy aroma of Cascade hops, followed by the crispy, fruity ale flavor delivered in a smooth, creamy body, the result of blending barley malt with torrified wheat. It's not like any other Goose Island Beer, but no less than you'd expect.

Best With:

Product - New Belgium Fat Tire

New Belgium
Self-Defined Style:
Amber Ale
Strength (ABV):
5.2% ABV
Color (SRM):
12º L

Named in honor of our founder Jeff's bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer's home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader pallet of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire's appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name.

Best With:
Chef Todd Davies, Partner of Tap House Grill, recommends fontina stuffed banana peppers with smoked chicken, fennel sausage, corn flan, and tomato fonduta. Spicy banana peppers cut the sweet malts, as the stuffing of the sweet hickory smoked chicken and fennel scented sausage complement, the fontina adds a pepperey element, complimenting the hops. The tomato sauce, cooked with fat tire, blends and smooths the ingredients, and the sweet corn flan cuts the spice, while adding and intensifying the sweetness of the malts.

Rogue
Self-Defined Style:
Maibock
Strength (ABV):

Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us. In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with Maierbock as the elixir. Strangely, the association with the Grateful Dead is pure coincidence. Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast.

Best With:
This amber colored ale pairs nicely with brothy soups, salted almonds, game birds and seafood. This brew also offers a nice companion to cheeses and fruits.

During the Lenten season, the monks were mandated to maintain abstinence of all foods other than bread and water. One enterprising young monk, Brother Barnabus, reasoned that since bread contains grains, yeast and herbs it was permissible to brew a hearty, nourishing beverage to help sustain them while not violating their Lenten observance.
