Extra Pale Ale

If you’d been rocketed into space against your will, you might be a little bitter too. Bitter American is our long-overdue tribute to unsung, unwitting heroes everywhere. This American session ale packs a lot of hop and malt flavor into a refreshingly lower-alcohol brew, making it the perfect beer to have on hand when you have a little history to make.

Bitter American is available year-round, in six pack cans and on draft. This extra pale session ale has lower alcohol but all the flavor and hop aroma you expect from a much bigger beer. Give one, or three, a try.

Best With:
The fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor of pale ale lends to this beer’s ideal match with generously spiced foods such as Southern barbeque, wasabi crusted Japanese dishes, and curry based Indian dishes. This style is also the perfect complement to grilled meats, burgers, and pizza.

Magic happened this year in Boulder, CO, when local music and local beer came together. In search of the perfect festival beer, our Boulder Beer brewers and avid homebrewer Kyle Hollingsworth, Keyboardist of the String Cheese Incident, joined creative forces. Imagination and improvisation flowed freely, and Hoopla was born.

Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale

Product - Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale
Brewed By:
Lagunitas
Self-Defined Style:
Wild Ale
Strength (ABV):
7.8% ABV

Another Big Sister of the Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale…. Loads of Malted Wheat for a Curious Malt Foundation and a Light Color, But Our Belgian Yeast Leaves a Huge Flavor and Complexishness.

Best With:
Generally speaking, Belgian ale is a gastronomic miracle. The delicate spicy and fruity nature of these ales, accentuated by the distinctive Belgian yeast strains, pairs beautifully with lamb, mussels, and semi-soft cheeses such as gouda, havarti, and tilsit.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Product - Smuttynose Pumpkin
Brewed By:
Smuttynose
Self-Defined Style:
Pumpkin Ale
Strength (ABV):
5.5% ABV

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America's brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and "pompions." In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Best With:
This beer is ideal with festive cuisine, particularly pumpkin bread, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

Smuttynose Homunculus

Brewed By:
Smuttynose
Self-Defined Style:
Belgian-Style Golden Ale
Strength (ABV):
9.9% ABV
Bitterness (IBU):
45 IBU

Homunculus, the newest addition to the Big Beer Series portfolio, is also the first beer to move up from our single-batch, draft-only Short Batch Series. Inspired by “Houblon Chouffe” from Belgium’s Brasserie d’Achouffe, our beer was first brewed in 2007 and was called “The Gnome.” This was a great name for an individual, draft-only release. Once the decision was made to scale-up to a Big Beer size, we decided to change the name in respect of Achouffe’s branding and image.

Best With:
Homunculus should pair well with a wide range of dishes. Its juicy fruit character will accentuate earthy foods like terrines and pâtés, sausages or hearty stews. Homunculus also has enough acidity to stand up to white, creamy pasta sauces and grilled salmon. For cheese courses, we suggest nearly any choice except blue cheeses.

Scaldis Special Ale

Scaldis Special Cognac Ale.jpg
Brewed By:
Scaldis
Self-Defined Style:
Belgian Strong Ale
Strength (ABV):
12.0% ABV

Scaldis, from Brasserie Dubuisson, is one of Belgium's strongest ales (12%) and one of its most delightful. Three different malts and Dubuisson's unique house yeast create a beer with as much nuance as potency. Enjoy Scaldis as a light alternative to Cognac or Brandy. Serve at cellar temperature (50-55o F.

Best With:
This big beer is best as an after dinner beer but those who seek a massive meal experience would appreciate the pairing between spicy chicken gumbos and Andouille Sausage. Also delicious with desserts and chocolate.
