Blithering Idiot is brewed in the British tradition of balanced, hearty ales. It’s a deep-copper ale with notes of date and fig. The finish is warm and fruity and begs for the next sip. Lay a few down. Aging only helps a barleywine develop more complexity. This fine ale will keep for years. We feel comfortable setting our “Best By” date out to five years beyond the bottling date.

Best With: 
Primarily thought of as a digestif, it turns out that barley wines have an affinity to lamb, venison and wild boar. Classic cheeses such as English and Vermont cheddars as well as aged Gruyeres from Switzerland. Caramelized desserts as crème brûlée and crepes as well as a good vanilla ice cream can finish a wonderful evening of food and beer.

In the early 17th century, a small order of monks migrated from Italy to what is now the city of Munich. These were the Paulaner monks. During the Lenten season, the monks were mandated to maintain abstinence of all foods other than bread and water.
