Named Grande Réserve in 75 cl (25.4 fl.oz.) bottles, it is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavor, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma, while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurized.

Best With:
Chimay Grande Réserve works wonders with creamy cheeses, chocolate desserts, or as a digestif.

Self-Defined Style:
Brown Trappist Ale
Strength (ABV):
8.0% ABV

This dark amber, flavorful beer is surprisingly refreshing at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining in the bottle. The Monastery is designing new labels for this beer, but for the moment is can be differentiated from the lighter Achel 8º only by the bottle cap - the blonde has a white cap and the bruin has a gold cap. Both beers are fantastic, however, so don't worry if you didn't get what you expected.

Best With:
Pair with roasted meats, cheeses, and some desserts such as chocolate.

In 2009, it has been 125 years since friar Isidorus Laaber hesitantly, with successes and setbacks, started what is now a stunning product. To commemorate this fact, we are releasing a special-occasion beer for the international market in this jubilee year. It is obvious that the beer will carry the name of our first brewing master. It is a homage to this simple friar with his golden hands, who made our brewery, and thus also our monastery, famous.

What happens when America’s original importer of Belgian artisan ales pairs up with one of Belgium’s most dynamic renegade microbreweries?
You get the next logical step in Belgo-American cross-fertilization - Vanberg & DeWulf's Hop Ruiter.
This 8% ABV bottle-conditioned strong golden ale combines Belgian appreciation for aromatic esters with the American love of hops. The balanced blend of the two is being simultaneously launched in the US and the Low Countries. Based on early response we think it is going to be a Belgo-American classic.

We suggest you enjoy Hop Ruiter as an aperitif -- or over a game of cards. Given the hunting history of the region - you'll find it a fine companion to game birds, venison and hare. "Jack D'Or" is a simple table beer, or "Saison Americain" as we're referring to it. We are not trying to coin a beer style – we’re just having fun. At PRETTY THINGS we don't brew styles per se. Instead, we re-imagine everything and leave the style numbers in books on the shelves where they belong. What that means is that while other people might be able to put our beers into a category, we have a hard time with it! Our beers are first and foremost creative beasts, not "types" of beer. Jack D'Or is the kind of beer Martha and I like to drink before, after and during a great meal.

Oskar Blues
Self-Defined Style:
American Pale Ale
Strength (ABV):
6.5% ABV

Dale's Pale Ale is our flagship beer and America's first hand-canned craft beer. It's an assertive but deftly balanced beer (somewhere between an American pale ale and an India Pale Ale) brewed with hefty amounts of European malts and American hops. It features a meringue-like head, a copper color, and a hoppy nose, thanks to a big post-boil addition of Centennial hops. To complement its hoppy first impression, Dale's also sports a rich middle of malts and hops, and a bracing finish.

Best With:
This intense example of an American Pale Ale would have a wonderful relationship with a hearty meal of steaks, stews and chili's. Strong and sharp cheeses, like the Roquefort or Stilton would pair nicely.

Have you read the description for the regular Crooked Tree yet? Well this beer is almost the same just double the flavor and alcohol. We actually took the Crooked Tree recipe and doubled all of the ingredients except the water, just the way a DOUBLE should be made. Big hops balanced with tons of malt give this beer a huge body. Although this beer is as cool as "The Fonz" when first purchased, it gets really mellow and smooth with some age. After a year or two stored in a cool dark place you'll notice the heavy caramel and malt flavors are trying to sneak past the hops.

Hoppy Farmhouse Blonde Ale
Strength (ABV):
4.5% ABV

Mon Dieu, that's good! This is one rich and très hoppy golden ale. In France, this beer is called Les Frères de la Bière. We thought that that was a bit much for Americans to get their tongues around, and the brewer agreed with us that it wasn't such a good name, anyway. But there is a meaning to Les Frères de la Bière.

Best With:
The unusually pleasant hoppiness of this Belgian-style ale make it an ideal match for some spicier hearty fare such as beef chili, dry rubbed pork ribs, and heavily spiced Thai dishes.

2009 – Our Tripel aged in a barrel for an extended period of time. Belgian esters and light fruit notes meld with a smooth vanilla and oak to create a rich smooth sipping beer. Our first batch rings in at 11.65%, medium bodied with a smooth finish.

2010 – Aged in Pinot Noir and Merlot barrels. Each of the seven barrels we used are from the same vintage of wine.

Unlike wine makers, we did not blend the contents from each barrel together. Rather choosing to let the subtle and unique differences from each barrel stand on their own.

Jai Alai India Pale Ale – Jai Alai IPA is a monster interpretation of an American IPA. In fact, it is so big that it equals the alcohol of some double IPAs on the market. Our IPA uses 6 different hop varietals, with Simcoe hops only being used for dry hopping. The rest of the hop additions are blended at different IBU's (International Bittering Units) in groups of three hops per addition in order to create more hop complexity. At CCB, we love hops but also feel that balance is important for IPAs.

Cigar City Humidor Series

Product - Cigar City Humidor Series
Brewed By:
Cigar City
Self-Defined Style:
Cedar Aged Beer

The Humidor Series is a rotating offering of Cigar City Brewing beer aged on cedar. We change the offering for every release so that more of our beers get to luxuriate in cigar box cedar.

Cedar has a more subtle effect on beer than more traditional woods like oak. But, we think that once you taste it you'll agree that cedar deserves a place along side oak in the brewer's wood-aging toolbox. Humidor series beers will vary due to style, but are always a good option for pairing with a fine cigar.

Best With:
Wood aged beers run a gamut of flavor profiles, however their typical robust alcohol content and mellow character enables them to work well with desserts or alone as digestif beers.

We went to England this past spring as self-styled “IPA Hunters” on a mission to learn more about the confusing and often contradictory history of India Pale Ale – to look for some certainty where those before us have found mostly mystery and mercantilism. While our success in this pursuit is open to debate, there can be no question that we returned home inspired by the ghosts of Burton and by the experience of poring over 150-year old brewer’s logs handwritten in (India?) ink.

Every two months Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and company turn out a new and inventive beer. We call these draft-only releases our Brewmaster’s Reserve. The latest batch goes by the name of Sorachi Ace. Here’s what Garrett has to say about it: Most Brooklyn beers are made with a blend of hop varietals. As a chef does with spices, we look to get the best qualities of each hop and create a harmony of flavors and aromas. However, a few years ago, we ran into a hop unique enough to deserve its own moment in the sun.

The first in a line of Brewmaster's "Special Reserve" beers, BLAST! Is a riotous celebration of hops. Here in Brooklyn, we're half-way between the hop country of Yakima Valley, Washington and the hop country of Kent in England. So we use the bright citrusy American hops to bring the noise and earthy English hops to build the foundation of a hop monster brandishing five pounds of hops per barrel with considerable finesse.

Best With:
BLAST! has a big enough flavor to work wonders with very spicy foods, especially Thai dishes, fiery Indian vindaloos, Mexican dishes featuring habanera chilies, and Jamaican jerk chicken.

Barrel-aged in Woodford Reserve bottles. Brooklyn Black Ops does not exist. However, if it did exist, it would be a robust stout concocted by the Brooklyn brewing team under cover of secrecy and hidden from everyone else at the brewery. Supposedly, "Black Ops" was aged for four months in bourbon barrels, bottled flat, and re-fermented with Champagne yeast, creating big chocolate and coffee flavors with a rich underpinning of vanilla-like oak notes. They say there are only 1000 cases. We have no idea what they’re talking about.

We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. First brewed in 2007 as the Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this ale was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didn't last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldn't be any more. For us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this ale. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self-righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours.

Sure, we’re a bunch of Arrogant Bastards, but we humbly admit that we were inspired to start brewing by other fantastic breweries and homebrewers. There are a whole lot of fellow craft brewers who we respect and admire, and who we’ve wanted to collaborate with. So why just dream about it? Starting in 2008, we released a new series of collaboration beers. The goal was to get three brewers from three different breweries to put their heads together and have some fun with no regard for boundaries.

Generally speaking, Belgian ale is a gastronomic miracle. The delicate spicy and fruity nature of these ales, accentuated by the distinctive Belgian yeast strains, pairs beautifully with lamb, mussels, and semi-soft cheeses such as gouda, havarti, and tilsit.

Tomfoolery Black Saison is the latest addition to our side project series of beers. Number 14 on the list, this ale boasts an uncharacteristic black color for a traditional saison, but is just enough for our experimental mentality. Made with a silly amount of rye, wheat and black malts, this dark spicy beverage will tickle the taste buds of any court jester in the land.

Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales, created by us - Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation.

Collaboration not Litigation ale is best with creamy cheeses, chocolate desserts, or as a digestif.

A very dark and entirely unique holiday seasonal beer, at a whopping 10% alc. by volume. Reportedly spiced with honey, caramel, coriander, black pepper, and other secret ingredients. "Beautifully warming with an amazing, almost overwhelming, depth of character. Well balanced bittersweet, fruity ale which must surely be the ultimate winter warmer." (The Beers of Wallonia.) Both authors of The Beers of Wallonia also give this Noël beer perfect 10's. The alcohol content probably goes a long way toward explaining that very warm and satisfied feeling one finds on the very first sip.
