Black IPAs

Haven't had one yet, but I am intrigued...
IPAs are good and black is good, so, naturally, it follows that Black IPAs should be good x 2.
Here's a list of Black IPAs in BEK's portfolio:

Black IPA
Strength (ABV):

First brewed in 2007 as the Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this ale was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didn't last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldn't be any more. For us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this ale. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self-righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours.

Brewed By:
Sierra Nevada
Self-Defined Style:
Black IPA
Strength (ABV):
8.7% ABV

A juxtaposition of the senses, this beer has the appearance of a dark porter but with the flavors of and American India Pale Ale. The rich ebony-brown body has a strong hop aroma with hints of orange peel combined with roasty malt aromas. The flavor is an interesting mix of resinous American hops and a light milk chocolate and slight smokey character from the dark grains. The finish speaks to IPA with a bold and bracing blast of citrusy hops.

We went to England this past spring as self-styled “IPA Hunters” on a mission to learn more about the confusing and often contradictory history of India Pale Ale – to look for some certainty where those before us have found mostly mystery and mercantilism. While our success in this pursuit is open to debate, there can be no question that we returned home inspired by the ghosts of Burton and by the experience of poring over 150-year old brewer’s logs handwritten in (India?) ink.

With a different recipe each year, this beer is guaranteed to be excellent in the company of good friends and good cheer.

Cascadian Dark Ale

Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.

The Yakima Valley of Washington is the heartland of American hops, having contributed uniquely flavorful varieties that have helped to redefine American brewing. Late summer harvest yields the bounty that builds this exciting ale. Vibrant and aromatic, this is their moment of glory as the vines have withered by the time you sip this. Dark malts warm the hops bright edge bringing harmony to the finish. Rest well hop roots! Spring will come and we'll be thirsty again!
