Ommegang Abbey Ale tasting notes
Appearance: Pours a dark, slightly opaque amber-brown with a big, fluffy beige head.
Aroma: A nice mix of candied dark fruits and a bit of lightly roasted malts.
Flavor: At first, the flavor is all dark fruits: figs, raisins, perhaps some plum. This initial sweetness then gives way to a rich complexity of other flavors like honey, caramel, and toffee. Beneath it all there is a slight roasted maltiness. The complexity is quite nice.
Mouthfeel: A medium bodied beer, there is just enough carbonation so that you know it's there. The relatively high ABV of this beer creates a lovely warming sensation in your mouth, adding a dynamic touch to the complexity of flavors.
Overall Impression: A solid beer on all fronts. Ommegang Abbey Ale possesses a rich, complex character. I would consider it a heavy beer, in light of its richness and 8.5% ABV, making it a wonderful brew to sip and savor.
Comments: I really love Ommegang Abbey Ale, and most of the other Ommegang offerings, for that matter. I first sampled Ommegang beers at a tasting in college. I tried four beers there, Abbey Ale included. Since that time, I have done what I can to try the rest of the Ommegang portfolio. So far, I have not been disappointed.
