Amber Ale Tröegs Brewery’s Flagship beer, HopBack Amber Ale derives its name from a vessel in the brewhouse called a hopback. As the ‘wort’ is being transferred from the brewhouse to fermentation it passes through the hopback vessel. Packed full of fresh whole flower hops, the wort slowly circulates through this vessel extracting the essence of the aromatic hops. This vessel adds more time and more hop character that creates a fresh, spicy taste and rich caramel note that defines this signature ale.
Best With:
Big, robust flavors like red meats and strong cheeses. The assertive flavors of our HopBack will hold up against strong cheeses like Stilton and Smoked Cheddar. User login

Troegs HopBack Amber (B+/A-)
Good beer with a great balance between the mild malty-sweetness of a traditional Amber and the hops of a paler ale.
Well balanced
Amber with some deep caramel undertones. Definitely well balanced -hops and malt work together and create a nice flavor that isnt too "in your face." Lingering of warm spice in the middle of your mouth and little to no biteback. Good beer.
light amber color more browns and golds than red though. decent one finger head that lasts and mild lacing on the side of the cup.
the smell is well balanced between hop and malt. its an earth malt... not an overly sweet one. and the hops are just a notch above subtle. a very non offending smell.
as for the taste. its slightly hoppy but with a reasonably mild finish...meaning no prolonger bitter aftertaste on the back of you tongue. the flavor seems to concentrate on the middle of the tongue both on the top and sides. well balanced carbonation. slight battle beetween mid tongue hoppiness and whole mouth sweetness. but its a near perfect example of how malt and bops combine to balance one another.
