5. Sly Fox Prometheus (8.3%): This imperial smoked porter is one of the microbrewery’s best beers. The smoke isn’t overwhelming and the porter taste seeps through nicely. Well-balanced, it’s usually only on tap in February with a special guest appearance at the brewery’s December anniversary party.
4. Firestone Walker Abacus (13%): This beer delivers. A barleywine aged in bourbon barrels, it packs a wallop, but the taste is startling. And I mean that in a good way.
3. Firestone Walker Double Jack (9.5%): This imperial IPA smothers the mouth in hops bitterness. Citrus and floral notes are present and combine for a taste that makes you want more. I probably had more of this IPA than any other beer this year.
2. Russian River Pliny the Younger (11%): As you may or may not know, my three-year quest to finally taste this scarce triple IPA ended April 2. And as much as I wanted to not like it, I couldn’t. It really is as good as people say. Brewed once a year, this is available on tap at very select better beer bars between February and early April. Getting some usually requires standing in a line or checking your favorite bar’s website or twitter account.
Or just dumb luck.
1. Firestone Walker Parabola (13%): This bourbon-aged imperial stout screamed the WOW factor. From the first sip to several bottles later, this has remained incredible. The bourbon flavor is strong, but this stout is so smooth with a mild bite that it can’t be matched. Off the charts time after time after time. And a runaway winner as 2011’s best.
