It's About That Time for a Porter

While it's sad to say goodbye to summer, the start of another great beer season is well underway. The arrival of fall always get us excited for outdoor beer fests, drinking without sweating and of course some damn fine seasonal brews. We've been rambling on and on about pumpkin beers and Oktoberfests for quite some time now so we figured we should take a minute to switch gears and tip our hat to our old friend Mr. Porter.

Created in England in the 1700's, this dark ale took on the name porter after it became the beer of choice among the transportation and shipyard workers (or "porters") of London. The style is still widely consumed to this day as many breweries across the country and across the globe for that matter have at least one porter recipe in their lineup from your basic session porter to imperial, Baltic, smoked and of course, barrel-aged. Porters are typically brewed year-round but seem to get their day in the sun, well, when there is no sun. The shorter days and brisk temperatures seem to awaken our senses for something roasty, toasty, rich and smooth. It’s the perfect choice to hunker down with after a day of frolicking in the leaves. Or during for that matter. Hey why not.

So enough rambling…..Our featured porter of the moment is Flying Dog’s Road Dog Scottish-style Porter. While you may have been lucky enough to crack open a FD variety pack and see a couple of these babies staring up at you, we are now happy to report that we have entire cases of ol’ Road Dog to get your season off on the right foot! Referred to as “Scottish” because of its intense deep brown color, rich mouthfeel and smoky/woody notes (all results of the Scottish brewing tradition of boiling the wort for a long period of time), Flying Dog’s sublime example also boasts flavors of dark chocolate, coffee and licorice and has a touch of sweetness to balance out the bitter finish. For all you foodies out there, Road Dog pairs magnificently with smoked cheeses and hearty dishes like roasted lamb or beef stew and how about some spicy pork tacos?! 4-packs, Sixtels & Half Kegs will be available this coming Monday – September 19th – so be on the lookout for it on store shelves and in restaurants near you!

Cheers and thanks for reading!
