It's the perfect time of year for a crisp and refreshing glass of Pilsner....and it just so happens we have a terrific selection of both traditional German Pilsners and American craft versions in-stock right now.
The name Pilsner comes from the Bohemian city of Plzen in the western part of the Czech Republic. It is here that the world's first golden lager was produced in 1842. This pilsner, brewed with native spicy Saaz hops, Moravian malted barley, Czech lager yeast and the area's trademark low mineral content water, soon became famous around the world for its rich malty character, complex floral nose and crisp bitter finish.
Neighboring German brewers quickly adapted their own versions using German malts, yeast and local hops such as Hallertauer in addition to the traditional Saaz hops. As a result, German pilsners tend to be slightly crisper, drier and lighter in color than the original Bohemian style.
Because of the pilsner's immense popularity and crowd-pleasing quality, countries around the world have been brewing their own interpretation of this style for over a century now. While there are many mass-produced, low quality versions in the market, there are a ton of wonderful hand-crafted options for you to choose from. If pilsners are a style of beer you've overlooked, we encourage you to revisit them and see for yourself how truly world-class they can be.
Pilsners make a great aperitif and are the perfect way to start off an evening with appetizers. They also pair very nicely with a salad of bitter greens, a mild cheddar cheese or chicken and salmon dishes.

Best With:
Since Sunshine Pils is a Summer beer, it is a fine compliment with all types of salads. It also pairs well with all shell fish and mild fish filets.
A Northern German style Pilsner brewed with imported German Pils malt and hopped with German and Czech hops. Light in body, light straw in color and dry.

A great gold pilsner will always work with all seafood dishes, brothy soups, tapas, and just about anything off the backyard grill. This brew also lends itself nicely jambalaya, falafels, and certain Caribbean dishes. Fried pub fare is also a fine accompaniment to German pilsener.
Our new canned good is a delicious, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czechoslovakia famous. Mama’s is made with hearty amounts of pale malt, German specialty malts, and traditional (Saaz) and 21st century Bavarian hops. It’s the perfect antidote for the watered-down, cornfed versions of pilsner clogging America’s shelves. Our first canned lager, it’s also fermented at cool temperatures with a German yeast. While it’s rich with Czeched-out flavor, Mama’s gentle hopping (about 35 IBUs) and low ABV (just 5.3%) makes it a luxurious but low-dose beer.
Crisp, full and firm bodied, with the classic golden color of a true Czech Pils. "Like Adam and Eve, Isaac and Ishmael, Mao and Confucius, Good and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena, or Groucho and Moe, Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still, we must love each other for who they are, separately but equally, with liberty, and justice, for all. Cheers!"

A great Bohemian-style pilsener will always work with all seafood dishes, broth based soups and tapas. This brew also lends itself nicely jambalaya, falafels, and certain Caribbean dishes. Don't forget a good pilsner is also excellent with bar foods.
Unique in taste. The secret lies in the water, which is still taken from the same well used well over 100 years ago. The water from our well is unusually pure and soft. That allows us to add a touch more hops to create the Friesian-bitter taste that distinguishes Jever Pilsner from any other beer.

This German-style pilsener pairs nicely with Mexican seafood dishes, fresh salmon, hors d'oeuvres, Quiche Lorraine, Cobb salad, gazpacho, tabouli, thick potato chips, fresh strawberries or cherries.
In two recent blind tastings, German beer drinkers picked Kulmbacher as the best Pils in Germany. Soon thereafter, a panel of beer journalists bypassed local favorites (Beck's and St. Paulie Girl) and voted Kulmbacher #1 in a tasting sponsored by the newspaper "Die Zeit" in Hamburg. Then, at a third blind tasting of leading Pilsners by students at the University of Bamberg (Germany's best-educated and most-sophisticated beer town) - Kulmbacher came out on top again.

The König pours clearer than about any beer you can imagine. This brew is a medium golden color with exceptional clarity and plenty of small, well-defined bubbles meeting at a thin white head that lingers for the duration of the beer. König has the typical aroma of a Pilsner, only with an additional dose of biscuity malt that gives this an unusually sweet bready aroma. In the mouth, this beer is exceedingly flavorful. It starts sweet and sharp on the tongue with just a slight bite of hop.
