Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine and Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine

Just when you thought this year couldn’t get any better, we are presenting you with not one, but TWO barley wines from Stone Brewing Company. Now let us inform you that this wasn’t part of Stone’s original grand master plan. Up until the middle of December, Stone was very excited to be introducing a new series called the “Odd Beers for Odd Years.” Their inspiration for this program came about when the brewing team diverted 30 barrels of the 2010 Old Guardian into separate fermentation tanks containing a Belgian yeast strain (the same one used in the Cali-Belgique). What they created was so magnificent that they couldn’t help but share it with the rest of the world. And since they’d been producing the original Old Guardian version for almost thirteen years they figured it was time to mix things up a bit. They were about to discover, however, that not everyone loved this idea as much as they did.

Cue the press release that ignited a revolution:
“...Starting in 2011, we’re kicking-off a program we’ve dubbed “Odd Beers for Odd Years.” Translation: in odd numbered years (2011, 2013, 2015, etc…) we’ll be releasing new variations on Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine and Stone Imperial Russian Stout in place of the classic version. A radical redirection for two reliably wonderful beers, we know, but we think you’ll be pleased with the results...”

Insert record scratching noise here. What? No original versions of OG or IRS this year? How could they do this to us?! Beer geeks everywhere began rioting in the streets, punching walls, burning flags and forming mutinies. Ok, well not really, but there were so many angry comments about this change that Stone decided to wave the white flag and release both the original version AND the new version to the beer loving community. But not without having some fun with it...

Pretty funny. So go on and get yourself a bottle of each and be sure to show Stone some love for sending you an extra gift this Valentine’s day!

Also NEW from Stone: SIXTELS of Arrogant Bastard and IPA! Now all you beer geeks with small kegerators have no more reason to whine!!!

Allow us to present you with the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine, in all its unadulterated glory. We make small adjustments to the recipe every year, just a little bit...as it provides an opportunity to try some different hops or malts. For the 2012 release, we made a deliberate effort to move away from the English hop influence of the past few years, taking out the East Kent Golding hops, subbing in a blend of American Chinook, Calypso and Cascade. Yes, that's right, Cascade.

Best With:
Primarily thought of as a digestif, it turns out that barley wines have an affinity to lamb, venison and wild boar. Classic cheeses such as English and Vermont cheddars as well as aged Gruyeres from Switzerland. Caramelized desserts as crème brûlée and crepes as well as a good vanilla ice cream can finish a wonderful evening of food and beer.

Self-Defined Style:
Belgian Style Barleywine
Strength (ABV):
11.3% ABV

When our illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with our Belgian yeast strain last year, we absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that we knew we needed an excuse to make more. So, in our unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even our own), we came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers – e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine – in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…).

Best With:
With an invigorating warming quality and a robust alcoholic content, barley wines are the ultimate night cap beers. The round, viscous body of barley wine and its fruity complexity enable it to pair well with fresh vanilla ice cream. Some experts also recommend pairing a rich barley wine with a strong Cuban cigar.
