Belgian-Style Tripel

De Koninck Triple d'Anvers

Brewed By:
De Koninck
Self-Defined Style:
Triple
Strength (ABV):
8.0% ABV

The Triple d’Anvers beer is the successor of the De Koninck Tripel. They both contain 8% alcohol volume, yet the Triple d’Anvers is a top-fermenting beer, unlike the previous triple.

This beer is lightly amber-colored and as mentioned, top-fermented. Whilst brewing, blonde and dark malts are used, without adding any herbs, because the harmonic mixture between malts and hops suffices to guarantee it’s desired flavour. When drinking it, you will first taste a sweet touch, followed by a combination of hop bitter, fruitiness, and a refreshing character, caused by the top-fermentation.

Abt
Strength (ABV):

ABT: Abt is Dutch for Abbot, thus the leader of the Abbey. No surprise this beer is named “Abt”, since it is also the leader of the Kapittel beers, the beer with the highest alcohol content (10% Alc. By Vol.), a Triple.
And a beautiful triple it is--refermented in the bottle, only good to drink after a few months aging, which is done at the brewery, and ready to be aged for up to 30 years.

Cambridge Brewing Tripel Threat

The tripels are generally the strongest specialty ales made by the Belgian and Dutch Trappist monastic breweries. Pale in color with a very distinct palate, they are painstakingly created as beers to be consumed on holidays and religious festivals. The Westmalle monastery originated this style in the 1920’s and continues to make the benchmark example. However, many secular breweries make a similar type. These are called abbey beers, as the term trappist is a legal appellation.

Petrus Gouden Triple

Brewed By:
Petrus
Self-Defined Style:
Belgian Special Ale
Strength (ABV):
7.5% ABV

Triple Style, which means that the brewer used three times the normal amount of malt to brew this higher alcohol ale. Pale in color, as a true triple is supposed to be, this mild and easygoing beer offers a flowery hoppy taste with a soft alcohol punch. The balance between the hop-bitterness and the malt-sweetness is perfect and leaves a smooth mouthfeel. The creamy head absorbs never ending bubbles from the deep golden colored body of the beer.

De Graal Tripel

Strength (ABV):

A heavy blond beer (alcohol content of 9% ABV). It is lightly sweet with a nice fruity ester and hoppy taste (finest German Poperingse hops). Some spiciness kicks in with an insinuation of coriander and pepper.

Van Steenberge Gulden Draak

Product - Gulden Draak.jpg
Brewed By:
Van Steenberge
Self-Defined Style:
Dark Tripel
Strength (ABV):
10.5% ABV

Gulden Draak is a dark brown Triple Ale, which makes it an exception among the Belgian Triples. The second fermentation offers the nice creamy head, the full body and all the vitamins of the centuries old brewers yeast. It is a "thick" beer, that you can actually "nibble" to experience the complex taste. Gulden Draak balances a natural malt toffee-like sweetness with a mellow happiness and some hoppy accents. The aroma is round, sweet and reveals the 10.5 alcohol by volume. Another name for this type of rich beer is: "Barley wine".

Van Steenberge Piraat

Brewed By:
Van Steenberge
Self-Defined Style:
Tripel
Strength (ABV):
10.5% ABV

In the 17th and 18th century, strong ale like the Piraat was highly prized by the seafaring captains for its keeping qualities and its high and healthy food value. The daily distribution of a pint of this ale kept the pirates in good health and gave them the spirit to survive the hard life on the sea. One had no water on a ship, but wine or strong beer that could be kept for months on the sea. Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness.

Bink Tripel

Brewed By:
Bink Brouwerij Kerkom
Self-Defined Style:
Tripel
Strength (ABV):
9.0% ABV

The homey little farmhouse brewery at Kerkom is one of the greatest breweries in the world, and hardly anyone outside of Belgium knows it.

We brought you Kerkom's Bink Blond – a wonderfully hoppy and characterful beer, one of our all-time favorites, and one you should be drinking every single day – but it hasn't even made a blip on the radar over here. It’s because of those little bottles, and the fact that the beer isn’t even 6% alcohol, isn’t it?
