This distinctly American style ale is full of fruity, citrusy hop character. A blend of bold hop varieties: Warrior, Citra, and Columbus bring an amazing, bright hop flavor and powerful aroma. The malt bill includes a charge of black malt to give a deep, dark color without the roastiness often associated with ales of this hue.

Only 120 precious barrels were brewed, adding more than half a ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so prepare your self for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hop addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level from 7% all the way to 10% by volume.

For the end of this four-beer IPA series, we pulled out some hop warhorses—Cascade and Amarillo—and incorporated a new favorite—Citra—into the mix. Following a similar grain bill to Scratch #38 and #39, #40 is a hazy orange beer with an off-white head, and plenty of hops to spare. In fact, this could be a Troegs record as more than three pounds of hops were added to each barrel brewed!

This ale has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, it has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry hopping at two sates of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew.
