While the burghermasters of one East Coast Scottish town were busying themselves with 'mashie niblicks', the brewmasters of Dunbar were more interested in mash tuns. Today, this centuries-old fascination for fine beer has given us St Andrews Ale. It's that rare modern phenomenon: beer that tastes like beer. 4.6 ABV, with a smooth, full-bodied, malty flavor and fruity palate, a glass of St Andrews Ale is the perfect mellow way to wind down.
Game birds, lamb and roast pork are ideal food pairings for this Scottish Ale.
Real Heavy (late winter/early spring release) draught only
Real Heavy is a traditional Strong Scotch Ale (Wee Heavy). It has a rich brown color, and a deep caramel flavor. Malt flavors dominate and are balanced by the alcohol (9.7% a.b.v.). It is brewed with English crystal malt, English hops, and fermented with English ale yeast. Fans of the Bitter End's award winning Prescott's Wee Heavy will not be disappointed.
For those of you who don't know who "Scotty Karate" is... He is a local one man band who plays an amazing slurry of honky tonk influenced, punk country songs. His voice is amazing as well as his high energy shows. (Check him out @ www.scottykarate.com) So, we decided to make a beer and name it in his honor. This beer is a big, full bodied Scottish ale. It is 9.75% alc. but it is very smooth and balanced. Since Scotty is also very passionate about beer I asked him to write a description for you, so from the man himself...

A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops - just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style. Deep mahogany color with nice tan head. Rich, toasty, malty aroma and flavor with a faint touch of smokiness. A tinge of hops provides the perfect balance to the maltiness. Full-bodied, smooth and warming.
AleSmith's Wee Heavy is an outstanding accompaniment to gamier meats, including venison or wild boar. Also great with grilled steak.
