Made in the German “Stein Bier” tradition, this smooth, robust dark lager is brewed with the addition of glowing hot granite to the kettle.

The addition of these Hot Rocks results in a vigorous “super boil” of sorts that caramelizes the sugars in the wort lending toffee, smoky caramel flavors to the beer that wouldn’t present themselves in a normal boil.

The color is a deep, ruby brown with streak of red and the aroma an incredibly inviting one of dark caramel, chocolate and toffee.

We spent a long night of brainstorming, around a few pints, to create a beer suitable to bid our good friends ado. This black beer is a Bohemian Pilsner gone dark. German malts, noble hops, and lager yeast combine for our take on this traditional beer style. Though they may be moving on, we won’t let the lights go dark.

This is a high gravity interpretation of the classic German style black lager. Generous amounts of dehusked German barley were used to give the beer its dark color without adding the roasted or burnt flavors that are associated with typical dark beers. This coupled with lower hopping rates lends to a smooth flavor with a medium body and mildly warming finish.

Our Oak Aged Dunkel is brewed using traditional German ingredients and aged on American Oak. The brew itself is highlighted by Munich malt, Tettnang hops, and German Ale yeast, resulting in a clean, earthy flavor. After primary fermentation is complete, we transfer the beer to a secondary aging vessel containing oak infusion spirals. These oak spirals contribute subtle,woody sweetness and vanilla notes. The wood complements the malt character and adds a layer of complexity to the delicate, herbal hops. The result is a pleasing, drinkable autumn beer.
