Summary

After leaving the teaching profession, I took over as the bar manager of a local pub with a mediocre beer list and faltering business. I was already a bit of a beer snob to begin with, so in an effort to differentiate our place from the other restaurants in the area, I quickly began educating myself further on all aspects of beer and the brewing industry. Not only did I use what I learned to work with our distributors to create unique, ever-changing bottle and taplists, but I also used my experience as a teacher to effectively pass this information on to my staff and customers to help them also develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the glory of beer. I also worked hard to closely observe the drinking habits and taste preferences of my customers (beers that were requested which were not on hand, beer styles that grew in demand with the changing seasons, etc.) As a result, our sales and reputation grew exponentially. After the bar closed down, due to a lease disagreement, I parlayed this experience into securing a position at Thomas Hooker Brewing, Connecticut's largest craft brewer, where I continue to work as needed (this is a part-time, on-call position). Each day I continue to add to my storehouse of knowledge with regards to beer, and am actively on the hunt for a full time position in some realm of the brewing industry.
